The Eastern Roman Empire or the Holy Roman Empire?

From Wiki:
The Holy Roman Empire was named after the Roman Empire and was considered its continuation. This is based in the medieval concept of translatio imperii and does not mean that the Empire's territory included the city of Rome, any more than did that of the Byzantine Empire, which also understood itself as the continuation of the Roman Empire (Βασιλεία Ῥωμαίων).

Also, why are we calling the Eastern Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire?

Rome is eternal. Like a phoenix it dies and is reborn, again and again. In its current form, it's known as the United States of America.

The true continuation of the Roman Empire is the Roman Catholic Church.

Both have a similar hierarchical structure. Both rely on absolute authority. Both chose their leaders by election - but not a popular election. And both speak Latin.

Because ( from what I remember) the ancient city that later became Constantinople ( the capital of Byzantine Empire) was originally called Byzantium or something like that.

It never did have absolute political authority. It's religious authority is absolute among it's members however; it still has that pesky power of attorney.

In any event I agree with DJ that if the Roman Empire has a continuation it's the Roman Church.

I disagree with the notion that the Catholic Church is a continuation of the Empire. Romans had religion but their lives weren't really centered around it, like it may have been for other empires or in other eras. They seem to have spent far more time trying to enjoy themselves...

idk. I think that the Byzantines/ the Eastern Roman Empire maintained the Empire much better than the Church could have. Besides, wasn't the Holy Roman Empire headed up mostly by Germans and Austrians?

Let's not kid ourselves with such blinded comparisons

There's a joke about the Holy Roman Empire. It was not really holy, not really Roman and wasn't really an empire

To answer your question, Rome died with Diocletian

To be honest, the real Rome died with Marcus Aurelius.
