The Eastern Roman Empire or the Holy Roman Empire? From Wiki: Also, why are we calling the Eastern Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire?

Rome is eternal. Like a phoenix it dies and is reborn, again and again. In its current form, it's known as the United States of America.

The true continuation of the Roman Empire is the Roman Catholic Church. Both have a similar hierarchical structure. Both rely on absolute authority. Both chose their leaders by election - but not a popular election. And both speak Latin.

The Catholic Church no longer has absolute authority.

In any event I agree with DJ that if the Roman Empire has a continuation it's the Roman Church.

I disagree with the notion that the Catholic Church is a continuation of the Empire. Romans had religion but their lives weren't really centered around it, like it may have been for other empires or in other eras. They seem to have spent far more time trying to enjoy themselves... idk. I think that the Byzantines/ the Eastern Roman Empire maintained the Empire much better than the Church could have. Besides, wasn't the Holy Roman Empire headed up mostly by Germans and Austrians?

Let's not kid ourselves with such blinded comparisons There's a joke about the Holy Roman Empire. It was not really holy, not really Roman and wasn't really an empire
